Looking for Braddock Fields
Team: Studio for Spatial Practice
Client: Carnegie Mellon STUDIO for Creative Inquiry
Location: Braddock, PA Date : 2004 - 2005
As a commissioned artist residency SfSP partners Jonathan Kline & Christine Brill worked with members of the Braddock community over a two year period to analyze and map fields of potential in Braddock, including its rich history, ecological recovery, emergent artist community and abundant vacant land. We also organized community planning events to explain and discuss the proposed Mon-Fayette Expressway, which would bisect the community with a raised limited access highway including a physical enactment of the presence of the highway in the neighborhood allowing residents to envision its impacts on their community.
Our work was exhibited and published in the show Groundworks: Environmental Collaboration in Contemporary Art. In the years since the project Mayor John Fetterman and Braddock have emerged as a nationally significant example of how to reimagine small communities in the post-industrial rustbelt.
