East Liberty TRID Study
Team: Studio for Spatial Practice, GSP, FHI
Client: Department of City Planning
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Date : 2011
Studio fSP, in partnership with GSP, led a study exploring the potential for transit oriented development and the establishment of transit revitalization investment district around one of Pittsburgh’s busiest rapid transit hubs, East Liberty Station on the East Busway. The project carefully examined development potential and recommended the creation of new value capture district around the station designed to support the creation of higher density transit oriented development and infrastructure improvements.
The East Liberty Transit Revitalization Investment District Revitalization Authority was created by the City of Pittsburgh in 2013 as the first TRID in Pennsylvania. The study also proposed a strategy for renovating the existing transit station which SfSP was hired to carry forward as design architects. In conjunction with the adjacent development project, the station reconstruction project won a federal TIGER grant in 2012 and the reconstructed station and adjacent development were completed in 2015.
